Join the I-LAS Volunteer Program and be part of a team turning awareness into action. Our volunteers work alongside lawyers, NGOs, and community partners to expand access to justice by supporting real clients, conducting outreach, and creating impact through empathy and collaboration. Whether you’re passionate about law, social issues, or community advocacy, your skills can make a difference.
In collaboration with Huadai Law Firm and pro bono lawyers in Chongqing and Shenzhen, China, I-LAS volunteers provide basic legal-aid support to indigent Deaf clients in fraud cases. We help clients prepare and file police reports, organize and summarize evidence, and accompany them to police stations. We also facilitate communication: coordinating calls and appointments, clarifying jurisdiction, and supporting interviews so statements are recorded accurately. Finally, we follow through by tracking case progress and escalating or redirecting when filings stall. To date, I-LAS volunteers have supported 6 Deaf clients in fraud cases, working to advance equal legal access for all.
In collaboration with Sign Language NGO (两杯水手语)to develop tailored legal education for the Deaf community, including monthly legal rights education posters (attached below), legal sign language learning sessions, and co-organized online awareness seminars.
In partnership with Beijing Qianqian Law Firm, I-LAS provides survivor-centered legal-aid support for women facing domestic violence and sexual harassment. Our volunteers explain court procedures in plain language, help document incidents and preserve evidence, and assist with drafting complaints or protection-order applications. We also connect clients to pro bono counsel, shelters, and other legal resources. To date, we have supported 5 women through this process.
I-LAS volunteers assist migrant workers in resolving housing disputes. Connecting them with local legal-aid partners, we help review rental and employment contracts, clarify rights and obligations, and prepare materials for mediation and negotiation. We also guide clients in communicating with landlords, local officials (visits to Court of Enforcement ), and legal professionals, ensuring their concerns are properly heard and addressed. To date, we have supported 2 migrant workers.
