I-LAS (Initiative for Law and Society) began with conversations among friends across public policy and human rights during the 2022 Shanghai lockdown, when many social challenges were laid bare.
When restrictions lifted, those conversations became commitments. We built a platform that seeks real interventions beyond talk, combining advocacy, education, and legal aid to bridge the gap between law and lived experience.
Through volunteer support and partnerships with lawyers, NGOs, and interpreters, I-LAS has delivered accessible legal services to communities facing systemic barriers, including the Deaf community, migrant workers, and women confronting discrimination or abuse.
At the same time, we work to prevent inequality at its roots, by promoting legal awareness, dialogue, and youth engagement. From 68+ student-led seminars on various topics including labor rights, disability inclusion, and women's protection, to our Gavel Girls podcast on legal issues, exploring justice and reform, I-LAS empowers young people to transform empathy into action.
